Surrounded by her children and grandchildren, Pauline Toole Hornung passed away on Friday, January 31, 2014, at Brookville Healthcare Center in Brookville, Indiana, at the age of 98. Pauline was born in Union County on January 21, 1916 to Harry and Leto Shirkey Toole. After graduating from Short High School in Liberty, Ind, in 1934, she attended Reid Memorial Hospital School of Nursing obtaining her R.N. Degree in 1938. Pauline went on to complete post-graduate coursework in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her career encompassed surgical as well as private duty nursing. For several years, she was on staff at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Ohio. On January 30,1939, she gave her heart and hand in marriage to Clifford Hornung of Oxford, Ohio. Together they enjoyed fifty years of marriage before Clifford's death in February of 1989. To them was given four children: Sue, Larry, Terry, and Pamela. She was a loving wife and mother, devoted to her family. Her ambition was to make her home a place of comfort and filled with love. "She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her." (Proverbs 31: 26-28) This is a true description of the woman that our mother was, and continues to be, in our hearts. Pauline attended the College Corner Presbyterian Church. She was an avid golfer. She loved traveling, fishing, gardening, and enjoying the beauty and wonders of nature with her husband and children. She is survived by two sons and their spouses: Larry Hornung and Carolyn of Brookville and Terry Hornung and Linda of Union County; two daughters and their spouses: Sue Thompson and Tom of Oxford and Pamela Frazee and Jerry of Liberty; eleven grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and spouse,Pauline was preceded in death by her brother, Arnold Toole, and her sister, Maxine Teetzel. Pastor Jason Bantz of College Corner Presbyterian Church will officiate at private Graveside Services at the College Corner Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Union County Foundation Scholarship Fund at 404 Eaton Street, Liberty, In 47353 or College Corner Presbyterian Church at 112 State Line, College Corner, OH 45003.
