Martha Jean Barrett Johnson, 94, of Franklin County, died Saturday, March 17, 2012, at Brookville Healthcare Center.
A Connersville native, Martha was born June 7, 1917, to Eugene and Lillie P. Birt Barbour. She was a 1935 graduate of Connersville High School and was a member of St. Gabriel Church. Martha had been employed as a nurse’s aide at Fayette Memorial Hospital and helped care for the animals on the farm. She had been a member of the Blooming Grove Home Economics Club, as well as, the Connersville Eagles and Moose Auxiliaries. Martha loved to go dancing and enjoyed playing cards. In her leisure time she liked to work in her yard and flower gardens.
Martha is survived by her husband, Charles Johnson, whom she married August 1, 1962 in Laurel; four sons and their spouses: Richard Barrett and Dana of New Castle, Bill Barrett and Myra of Connersville, Monte Barrett of Richmond; Michael Johnson and Karen of Brookville; her sister: Agnes Thurston of Richmond; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Martha is preceded in death by a son: James T. “Sonny” Barrett; her first husband: James Barrett; her twin sister: Mary Leapley; a sister: Florence Sasser and a brother: William “Willie” Barbour.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Pastor Chuck McMahan of the Smyrna Baptist Church, New Trenton, officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel North Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday where memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society.
