Janie A. Selke, 73, of Connersville, died Thursday morning, October 22, 2015, at Reid Health in Richmond.
Janie, a Connersville native, was born June 3, 1942 to Claude and Louise Adams Miller and later graduated from Connersville High School, Class of 1960. She then studied at Ball State University in Muncie. On April 16, 2002, Janie married Nevin R. Selke, at the Springersville Church by Reverend Orr. Janie was a fantastic professional artist who received numerous awards for her paintings and hand sewn quilts. She was a lifetime member of Conner Quilters and an avid supporter of Krusaders 4 Kids. Janie was also a member of the Whitewater Valley Arts Association, Jenny Lou Home Extension Club and Kentucky Colonel. She had previously been employed at Eastview Elementary as a teacher’s assistant and at Fort Ben Harrison where she taught artistry and poetry. Janie was also a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband of thirteen years, Janie is survived by her children: Joe Means and his wife, Cheri of Indianapolis; John C. Selke and his wife, Marci of Jacksonville, Florida; Tisha R. Pilgrim of Sarasota, Florida; her sister: Saranne Peak of Connersville; her grandchildren: Jesie Means of Indianapolis; Kyle and Alec Selke of Jacksonville, Florida; George Pilgrim IV of Sarasota, Florida; her brother-in-law: Nolen Selke and his wife, Jeannie of Connersville; her sister-in-law: Kathy Selke of Colorado Springs, Colorado; her nephew: John Peak of St. Petersburg, Florida; her niece: Julianne Hyser-Cooper and her husband, Ronnie of Connersville; her great-nephews: Anthony Hyser of Anderson; Justen Leucke of Brownsville; her great-nieces: Jessica Hyser of Richmond; Kylianne Cooper of Connersville.
In addition to her parents, Janie is preceded in death by her son-in-law: George Pilgrim III; her brothers-in-law: Narvel “Buddy” Selke and Donald Peak.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at 12 noon, Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville with Pastor Ronnie Wylie, Jr. of Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may visit at the funeral home Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of service where memorial contributions may be made to the Grace United Methodist Food Pantry.
