James Spivey, 92, of Connersville, died early Saturday morning, November 7, 2015, at Heritage House of Connersville.
James was born on the farm in Jackson County, Kentucky, October 26, 1923 to Gentry and Almedia Brandenburg Spivey and attended school there. In 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army where he served during WW II as a gun crewman with the 120th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. His military decorations included the EAME Theater Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars, Silver Star Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. James was married in McKee, Kentucky on June 7, 1947 to the former Maggie Gabbard who died March 19, 2001. He retired from H.H. Robertson and its predecessors in 1985 following 38 years of employment. James was a member of Buena Vista Baptist Church in Franklin County, the AFL-CIO Sheet Metal Workers Union and was a life member of the Outlaws Car Club with his 1947 Dodge Coupe. He had also been active in a CB Club with the handle “Sunset Jim.”
James is survived by his son: Darrel Gene Spivey of Brookville; his grandson: James Daniel Spivey of Indianapolis; his brother and his wife: Bruce and Lois Spivey of Connersville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents and his wife, James is preceded in death by three brothers and their wives: Laban Spivey and Lyda, Eldred Spivey and Ruth, Arlin Spivey and Cora.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, with Pastor Freddie Helton of the Everton Southern Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery with military honors provided by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.
