Ernest Carrol Hartley, 96, formerly of Liberty, died on Saturday, October 31, 2015, at The Knolls in Oxford.
Ernest was born in Greencastle, Indiana, on January 17, 1919, to Greenup and Mattie E. Hughes Hartley. He was a 1937 graduate of Union High School in College Corner. Ernest was a WWII Veteran serving as a Staff Sargent in the Army Air Corp. He served from January 1941 through November 25, 1945 and also served ten years in the Reserves. Ernest donated his metals to the Veteran History Project at the Library of Congress. On May 10, 1946, he married Kathleen Shepard in Connersville. Ernest was employed by American Kitchens for eleven years, Miami Cleaners for seventeen years, and at Miami University for nineteen years in maintenance. Ernest was a member of the Oxford Church of the Nazarene.
Ernest is survived by three nephews: Bryce Grimme and wife Katherine of Hamilton, Loren Hartley and Monte Hartley of College Corner; and one niece: Wanda Pierce of Richmond. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of fifty-two years, who died on February 10, 1998; five brothers: William Estel, Dennis, Chester, James, and one infant brother; and five young sisters before Ernest was born.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, November 6, 2015, at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel, in Liberty with Rev. Ray Grilliot of the Oxford Church of the Nazarene officiating. Interment will follow in College Corner Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by American Legion Post #122 and VFW Post #1472 of Liberty. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service where memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Church of the Nazarene.
