Dewey Foster Baldwin, 92, of the Alpine community in Fayette County, died Saturday evening, June 27, 2015, at his residence.
Dewey was born September 5, 1922 in Franklin County to Dewey Herbert and Birdie Mae Marcum Baldwin. He attended school in Franklin County and entered the U.S. Army in 1942. Dewey served as a heavy machine gunner during WW II including twenty months in the Aleutian Islands. His military decorations included the American Theater Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one bronze star. Dewey had been employed at Roots Blower for ten years and had also worked as a crane operator at the Louis Joseph Salvage Company. Dewey was a member of the Laurel Pentecostal Holiness Church and enjoyed being with people. He was an accomplished musician, guitar player and singer. Dewey loved singing for the Lord and enjoyed sharing his talents at local churches and events. He also enjoyed his trips to the Smokey Mountains with his family and was a very strong, loving, caring and devoted husband, Dad and grandfather. Dewey was extremely loved by his wife, children and their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Dewey is survived by his wife of over 72 years, the former Virginia “June” Rowe, whom he married August 15, 1941 at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church; his children and their spouses: Howard Baldwin and Sandy, Ronald Baldwin and Diane, Rebecca “Jan” Cooper and Dennis, Daniel Baldwin and Janet, Pamela Patterson and Jack, Mary Ann Underwood; former son-in-law: George Underwood, all of the Connersville area; his brother: Dennis Baldwin and his wife, Sue of Fairfield, Ohio; 22 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dewey was preceded in death by three sisters: Dorothy Kersey, Shirley Davidson, Delores Baldwin; a brother: Orville Baldwin; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Laurel Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Glen Goins officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel North Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 1 p.m. Friday at the church.
