David Michael “Mike” Wilson, 60, of the Columbia community died Sunday, March 4, 2012 at his residence.
Mike was born January 18, 1952 in Rushville to Lowell and Jewell Grizzell Wilson. He attended Connersville High School and married the former Cathi “Sue” Lykins on September 18, 1971 in Tennessee. Mike was a member of the Indiana National Guard for 11 years, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, then served in the Reserves for two-and-a-half years. As a self-employed general contractor operating as Wilson Construction, he had helped remodel the Columbia Community Center and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Connersville.
Mike was a member of the National Rifle Association, and was an avid hunter of moose, bear, coon, and deer. Combining his love of the outdoors and family, Mike built a campground with a pond and shelter for his family and other groups to use. He loved spending time with his grandkids and had taught them how to hunt and fish, and had helped his grandson build a scale railroad model.
Mike is survived by: his wife, Sue; three children: Shawna Humbert of Laurel; Jeanna Gambill and her husband, Jim; Brian Wilson, all of Connersville; six grandchildren: Sierra Matthews, Connor Matthews, Noah Oglesby, Parker Gambill, Hallie Wilson and Brian Layne Wilson; a sister: Sandy Wilson, of Columbus; mother-in-law: Rose Lykins, of the Columbia community; brother-in-law: Brad Lykins and his wife, Connie, of Camby; two nephews: Jeremy and Luke Lykins; a niece: Amber Hughes; two great nieces: Christianna and Liviah Lykins.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; father-in-law: Mack Lykins; grandson: Michael Oglesby; grandparents: Myrtle and Ray Grizzell, and Katherine and Earl Wilson.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 9, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville. Interment will follow in Columbia Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. where memorial contributions may be made to Riley Hospital for Children.
