Arthur F. “Art” Fields, 80, of Liberty, died Monday, September 24, 2012, at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida.
A Liberty native, Art was born April 6, 1932 to Milton and Nellie Frasur Fields. He attended Short High School in Liberty and entered the U.S. Army in 1950. His was stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky and later in Oklahoma. Art served almost three years in Korea, attaining the rank of Corporal prior to his discharge in 1953. Art was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign War and American Legion in Liberty and the Connersville AMVETS. In 1995, he retired from the Street Department of the Town of Liberty and then was employed for fourteen years at the Liberty Country Club until 2010. Art was a member of the Liberty Volunteer Fire Department and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #1065, Connersville. He had served as a reserve deputy with the Union County Sheriff’s Department during the administrations of Charlie Marcum and George Boggs. Art enjoyed camping and the fellowship of family and friends around the campfire.
Art is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Carolyn J. Horn whom he married December 4, 1965 in Richmond; his children: Shelley L. Sorrell and her husband, Duane of Brownsville; Arthur F. “Bud” Fields, Jr.; Kaye Lakes and her husband, Freddie; Lisa M. Paxton and her fiancé, Buddy Cramer, all of Liberty; his grandchildren: Natasha Ross, Cody Sorrell, Sarah Dunaway, Stacey Carter, Kara Jean Messer and Kayla Paxton; his great-grandchildren: Paige and Madison Dunaway, Mackinzey and Ray Carter; nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, Art was preceded in death by two sets of twin brothers and his granddaughter: Shelby Nichole Sorrell.
Memorial services will be conducted at a later date following cremation. Memorial contributions may be made at the funeral home to the Union County Disabled American Veterans.
